At Lians, we know how important this is. Here's our simple checklist for a safe and hassle-free winter dormancy:
1. Drainage of the water system — the most important job!
Have you remembered to drain the water on your cart or motorhome? PS! Cars and wagons delivered to us for winter storage before September 30 have been emptied. Carts and campers set here after On September 30, remember to empty yourself — OR get in touch if you need to set up an hour to carry out winter preparations!
This is the point where the most expensive injuries occur, so be extra careful:
- Drain all water: Run the water pump completely dry. Empty the fresh water tank, waste water tank (gray water) and toilet tank.
- Open all taps: Leave the taps open in the middle position (between hot and cold) after emptying.
- Water Heater: Check the instruction book to find the drain valve for the water heater. It must be completely emptied.
- Shower and toilet: Remember to run the water out of the shower hose and the flushing/cistern into the toilet.
- Antifreeze (optional): Some choose to pour some antifreeze for water systems into drains and into the siphons for added protection.
2. Power and batteries
- Campervan: Charge the starter battery. Disconnect the negative pole of the battery or use a maintenance charger to keep it in good condition through the winter.
- The caravan: Take out the bodels battery and set it for charging and maintenance in a dry, frost-free place. Batteries that stand in the cold without charging can be damaged.
3. Cleaning and ventilation
- Thorough wash: Thoroughly wash the exterior and interior.
- Drain and clean: Remove all food, drinks, fabrics that can attract moisture, and other valuables.
- Drain gas: Shut off the gas and disconnect the gas cylinders.
- Keep it dry: Open cabinet doors, vents and air vents to ensure good air circulation and avoid condensation and mold. Feel free to place moisture absorbers inside the cart/camper.
4. Cover and storage location
- Deck: Increase the air pressure in the tires to the maximum recommended pressure to avoid “flat spots” during prolonged standstill.
- Parking: Campers should not stand on the handbrake as this may freeze solid. Use bricks or wheel stoppers.
- Storage: Store the vehicle under a roof or with a breathable cover to protect from the elements. Avoid tight tarps that close in moisture.
